In simple terms According to Wikipedia a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application) that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers . So you can understand this by following example,
let's assume that someone(Raju Bhai) is going to market to buy fruits. and you request him to buy bananas for you from xyz shop. so, he'll go to market then, he'll ask the person at xyz shop for bananas and after that he'll bring bananas for you. so here, the person at xyz shop didn't know that the person who bought bananas from him(Raju Bhai) actually bought for you. so your identity remained private. so, we can understand Proxy as Raju Bhai and the admin server from where we want to access any resource as the person at the xyz shop. and ourselves as a client server.

In short, according to our story...

• Raju Bhai                   =    Proxy
• Person at xyz shop    =   Admin Server
• You                             =   Client Server

You might be wondering that why we would ever need to use proxy even we can contact to admin server directly... i mean we can buy bananas directly by ourselves from xyz shop. so here is the answer, if you are going to buy banana by yourself the person at xyz shop will identify you ( Know about you).. so to keep that private we are using proxies.
